this is what happened

This is What Happened | New Performance Company

On a wet and wintry night there is something quite wholesome about stories by women, told by women and focusing really on women’s stories. This is What Happened is a series of five plays written by Gaylene Carbis, Alix Phelan, Margaret McKenzie and under the direction of Brenda Palmer is performed by the very talented Janet Watson-Kruse, Carolyn Masson and Peppa Sinclar.

Performed in the congenial space of Gallery 314 performances are intimate and personal and while the content is quite specific to women, men certainly seemed to enjoy the feminine glimpse that the five plays afforded. The two stand out scripts were those of Alix Phelan and Margaret McKenzie and while Janet Watson-Kruse was undoubtedly the star of the evening giving Gaylene Carbis’ monologue much depth and infinite hilarity, she was very well supported by Masson and Sinclar.

Overall the show (which ran for just over an hour) had good pace and made interesting use of the minimalist props. There is a slight ambiguity in the opening play as to the purpose of having a performer on stage who seems to have no purpose and direction in relation to the sisterly conversation happening beside her but apart from that one inconsistency the show as a whole ran very well and is a perfect recipe for winter theatre.
